Construct and launch a rocket. Discover how a helicopter flies. Make your own badge and wear it proudly.

These are some of the children’s’ activities planned on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, during the 47th National Stearman Fly-In at Galesburg Municipal Airport.

All area youngsters are invited to participate, says Carrie Wolford of Iowa City, IA, coordinator for the event. It’s scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Jet Air, Inc. hangar at the airport.

“We’re planning things to do for toddlers through 8th grade,” says Wolford. The list of activities includes:

>> Try your hand at “flying” in an airplane motion simulator, hosted by Ric and Lisa Woldow, Morton, IL.

>> Make a paper rocket and launch it – some go as high as 40 feet in the air, Wolford says.

>> Fashion a paper helicopter. “It’s more of a ‘whirligig’ than a helicopter, but it teaches the principles of aerodynamics,” Wolford says.

>> Make a statement with a Stearman Fly-In button. Youngsters may color a button – a template will be provided, or create their own design – and wear it proudly.

>> Face painting. (Recommended: Blue and yellow for Army Air Corps Stearmans, lots of yellow of Navy Stearmans.)

>> Enjoy presentations by “The Storyteller,” Hans Nordsiek, Bergeijk, The Netherlands, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Youngsters who participate in children’s’ activities will also get a free ticket for a tram ride along the Stearman flight line, says Fly-In President Phillip Wolford. Youngsters must be accompanied on the tram by a responsible adult.
