Two pictures show Larry Tobin’s 1927 Stearman C3B after the engine quit and he made an off-field landing Sept. 20, 2008, in Washington. Tobin banked so the left wings hit a tree to avoid crashing into a barn. He says the C3B’s wood wings absorbed the energy of the crash and saved his life.
