Flying, Friends, Fun! Join us Sept. 2-7, 2013, for the 42nd National Stearman Fly-In at Galesburg, IL, Municipal Airport

Work is under way on this year's Fly-In schedule, and planners promise it will include all the activities that make the National Stearman Fly-In the must-attend event of the year for Stearman owners, restorers and enthusiasts.

Of course, there will be plenty of time to catch up with Stearman friends, to savor the sights and sounds of the largest annual gathering of Stearman aircraft in the world, and to take a nap under the wing of your favorite airplane.

  • Monday, Sept. 2, 2013
  • 7-11 a.m.: Hog Capital of the World Days fly-in breakfast, Kewanee Municipal Airport, Kewanee, IL. Food charge.
    9 a.m.: Daily pilot briefing, Stearman Fly-In seminar tent, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    Activities continuing throughout the day:
    Poker run.
    Fun flying, buddy hops, hangar flying.
    10 a.m.: Galesburg Labor Day Parade fly-over.
    10 a.m.-6 p.m.: Narrated tram rides along Stearman flight line for general public (weather permitting). $1 per person.
    6 p.m. Welcome Picnic for Fly-In participants at Jet Air Hangar, Galesburg Municipal Airport.

  • 9 a.m.: Daily pilot briefing, Stearman Fly-In seminar tent, Galesburg Municipal Airport
    Activities continuing throughout the day:
    Poker run.
    Fun flying, buddy hops, hangar flying.
    9:30 a.m.: Seminar. Topic to be arranged. Fly-In seminar tent, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    10 a.m.-6 p.m.: Narrated tram rides along Stearman flight line for general public (weather permitting). $1 per person.
    Evening: Dinner at Cerar's Barnstormer Restaurant, Monmouth, IL. Order from menu. Ground transportation available; contact Stearman Fly-In office.

    11 a.m.: Fly-out to Kewanee Municipal Airport, Kewanee, IL. Food charge.
    2 p.m.: Stearman Aerobatic Contest at Monmouth, IL, Municipal Airport.
    4 p.m.: Pilot briefing for Monmouth Prime Beef Festival Parade fly-over. Fly-In seminar tent, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    5 p.m.: Monmouth Prime Beef Festival Parade fly-over.
    Evening: Dine out in Galesburg.

    7:30 p.m.: Movie Night at Jet Air hangar. Feature to be arranged. Free.

    9:30 a.m.: Stearman Restorers Association annual meeting, Fly-In seminar tent, Galesburg Municipal Airport. SRA President Ken McCullough, Upland, CA, presiding.
    10 a.m.-6 p.m.: Narrated tram rides along Stearman flight line for general public (weather permitting). $1 per person.
    10:30 a.m-2 p.m.: Picnic fly-out.
    2:30 p.m.: Briefing for short field take-off, flour bombing and spot landing contests, Fly-In seminar tent.
    3:00 p.m.: Short field take-off, flour bombing and spot landing contests, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    6 p.m.: Beverage wagon opens, Jet Air Hangar, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    7-8 p.m.: Friday Night dinner at Jet Air Hangar, Galesburg Municipal Airport. Food, beverage charges.

  • 6:34 a.m.: Dawn Patrol flights launch. Destination to be arranged.

    9 a.m.-4 p.m.: Art in the Park, Standish Park Arboretum, downtown Galesburg. Juried fine art and craft fair featuring painters, sculptors, potters, weavers, basket makers, jewelers. Check pilot packet for more information.
    10 a.m.-6 p.m.: Narrated tram rides along Stearman flight line for general public (weather permitting). $1 per person.
    1:30 p.m.: Formation Flying contest briefing at Stearman Fly-In seminar tent, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    2 p.m.: Formation flying contest, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    3:30 p.m.: Seminar. Topic to be arranged. Fly-In seminar tent, Galesburg Municipal Airport.
    7 p.m.: National Stearman Fly-In Annual Banquet and Awards Presentations at Jet Air Hangar, Galesburg Municipal Airport. Serving until 8 p.m. Food, beverage charges.
    Fly-in officially ends.

  • Fly-Out Breakfast. It's a Galesburg tradition. Get up early to see Stearman aircraft depart for home. All-you-can-eat breakfast from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. served by Galesburg Noon Lions Club at Jet Air hangar, Galesburg Municipal Airport. Food charge.

    Airport information

    Galesburg Municipal Airport (KGBG): 1.5 miles west of city; elevation 764 feet.

    Paved runways: 03-21, 5,800 x 150 feet, lighted; 10-28, 3,600 x 100 feet, lighted. Grass runway: 03-21L, north of 10-28. Landing pattern: Left, 800 feet.

    Unicom: 123.0: ATC Clearance Delivery: 120.7 Automatic Weather Observation Service (AWOS): continuous on 109.8 or call (309) 342-3711.

    Stearman parking: Tie down to cables in fenced area on northwest corner of field. Bring your own tie-down ropes and stakes.

    Fixed base operator: Jet Air Inc., (309) 342-3134.

    Registration, fees

    Registration: Pilots and visitors may register at the National Stearman Fly-In office at Galesburg Municipal Airport beginning on Monday, Labor Day. A packet of information will be distributed to the pilot-in-command of each Stearman aircraft at registration.

    Flight line badges: All persons must have a flight badge to enter the restricted tie down area. No charge for Stearman pilots, owners, Stearman Restorers Association members, their families and those in their parties. Other qualified persons (details available at National Stearman Fly-In office) may purchase a flight line pass for the entire week for $5.

    Other charges: Most Fly-In events are open to the general public. Charges, if any, are detailed on the schedule.

    Tram rides

    The general public is invited to take a narrated tram ride along the Stearman flight line. Trams operate daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. weather permitting. Fee is $1 a person.

    Shuttle vans, taxis

    Shuttle vans: The National Stearman Fly-In will provide free van shuttle service between the Galesburg Municipal Airport and local hotels. To arrange rides, call (309) 343-6409 during daylight hours.

    Camping

    Area facilties: Lake Storey Allison Campground, (309) 344-1534; Galesburg East Campground, (309) 289-2267; Whispering Oaks Campground, (309) 876-2306.

    A limited number of camping spaces are available at Galesburg Municipal Airport. Contact the National Stearman Fly-In for details.

    Galesburg dining

    Galesburg has more than 60 restaurants featuring a variety of foods sure to please Fly-In visitors. For information, inquire at the National Stearman Fly-In office or check the restaurant listing at the Galesburg Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Web site.

    Free fuel for Stearman pilots

    Vouchers for $30 worth of free fuel will be given to the pilot-incommand of each Stearman aircraft flown to Galesburg for the 42nd National Stearman Fly-In. Vouchers will be issued during registration and may be redeemed at Jet Air, Inc. This fuel program is made possible by a generous donation to the National Stearman Fly-In by the City of Galesburg.
