NATIONAL STEARMAN FLY-IN 2010 AWARD WINNERS

GALESBURG, IL – Here are the award winners from the 39th National Stearman Fly In held Sept. 6-11, 2010, at Galesburg Municipal Airport:

Early Bird (first pilot-in-command to arrive at Galesburg Municipal Airport for the 2010 Fly-In who remained for the duration): Michael Porter, East Liverpool, OH, arrived Aug. 30 in Stearman N59293.

Longest Cross-Country (awarded to the pilot whose direct route from his or her home airport to Galesburg was the longest in a Stearman): John Hodgson flew 3,529 statute miles from Hollister, CA , via the Great Circle Route through the Northern Rockies into Canada in Stearman N450SH.

Youngest Pilot (awarded to the youngest pilot who, acting as pilot-in-command, landed a Stearman upon its arrival for the 2010 Fly-In): David Bates, 23 years old, Faribault, MN, Stearman NC3976B.

Most Vintage Pilot: (awarded to the oldest person who, acting as pilot-in-command, landed a Stearman upon its arrival for the 2010 Fly-In): Bob Siegfried, 81 years old, Downers Grove, IL, Stearman N3977A.

Rescue Drop (for the flour bomb dropped closest to the center of the target): First: N349DC, Claude Sonday,  pilot and bombardier, 6 ft., 5 in.; Second: N57989, George Pascal, pilot and bombardier, 13 ft., 2 in.; Third: N49605, Jim Ebell, pilot, Calvin Howard, bombardier, 27 ft.

Short-Field Takeoff (stock engines, shortest distance from start of take-off roll until airborne): First: N939W, Alan Wright, 287 ft.; Second: N33NA, Roger Brown, 291ft.; Third: N53549, Fred Wright, 304 ft. Note: Third Place was initially awarded by judge’s error to N555, Clifton Lowe, 312 ft.

Short-Field Takeoff (275- to 300-horsepower engines, shortest distance from start of take-off roll until airborne): First: C-FTTN, Thomas Thomas, 205  ft.; Second: N65011, Jeff Hamilton, 386 ft.

Short-Field Takeoff (450-horsepower engines, shortest distance from start of take-off roll until airborne): First: N806RB, Brian Aukes, 245 ft.;   Second: N146CM, Jim Martin, 265 ft.; Third: N7711J, Rick Stratton, 268 ft.

Precision Landing Contest (landing closest to a designated line): First: N4610V, Karl Vacek, 145 ft.; Second: N939W, Alan Wright, 165 ft.; Third: N9HY, Larry Jacobi, 220 ft.

Aerobatic Competition: First: N5010V, Terry Middaugh; Second: N450SH, John Hodgson; Third: N52129, Taylor Fox.

Best Custom (in recognition of creativity and workmanship on custom Stearmans): NC3976B, David Bates, Faribault, MN.

Best Military Custom (in recognition of creativity and workmanship on military custom Stearmans): C-FTTN, Thomas Thomas, Cochran, Alberta, Canada.

Lloyd Stearman Award (presented to a Stearman documented to be of significant importance in the Stearman  Aircraft Company’s history, or one that has been restored to replicate or preserve the historic accuracy of a civilian or military Stearman): N59293, Mike and Andy Porter, East Liverpool, OH.
